Learn the essentials about electricity, gas, and water services in Korea! Understand billing, subscriptions, and service usage to manage your utilities effectively.
1️⃣ Electricity
The standard voltage in Korea is 220V/60Hz. Before using any electrical appliances, make sure to check if the voltage is compatible. Your electricity bill is calculated based on monthly consumption. If you live in a collective housing, electricity charges may be included in your monthly fees.
- For inquiries regarding billing, payments, or subscriptions, you can contact the 24-hour call center at 123 or visit the KEPCO website (www.kepco.co.kr) available in Korean, English, Chinese, French, and Spanish.
2️⃣ Gas
Gas distribution in Seoul is mainly through the urban gas network. In some areas not connected to the grid, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is delivered in canisters. Gas is commonly used for cooking and heating.
- To open a new gas service, contact the local gas provider. A technician will visit to check the installation and activate the service.
- For more information, visit the Korea City Gas Association website (www.citygas.or.kr).
Also note that the technician visits every accomodation periodically – whether it is your home, a rental or an Airbnb. If you are not home, they will leave a note, and come back
3️⃣ Water
Water bills are issued every two months and cover the usage of tap water and wastewater treatment. During winter, it’s important to protect your water meter from freezing to avoid damage.
- In case of freezing, you can insulate the meter with materials like towels to block cold air.
- For more information on water services and billing, you can contact the Seoul Waterworks Authority at 120 or visit arisu.seoul.kr.
Typically these three services have already been set up. Your work will be maintenance, management and paying your bills upon reception at your home address.
